VIDEOGAMES HISTORY
Αυτό που βλέπετε τώρα, είναι αυτό που θεωρείται ευρέως ως το πρώτο βιντεοπαιχνίδι που κατασκευάστηκε ποτέ! Δημιουργήθηκε από τον φυσικό William Higinbotham το 1958. Το Tennis for Two παιζόταν σε έναν παλμογράφο. Ο παλμογράφος είναι μια συσκευή που χρησιμοποιείται για την εμφάνιση και την ανάλυση της κυματομορφής των ηλεκτρονικών σημάτων. Ενώ υπήρχαν προηγούμενες δημιουργίες που μπορούν να χαρακτηριστούν ως βιντεοπαιχνίδια, όπως η «Συσκευή Ψυχαγωγίας με καθοδικό σωλήνα» και ο υπολογιστής Nimrod. Αυτές οι κατασκευές δημιουργήθηκαν με σκοπό την επίδειξη της υπολογιστικής ισχύος ή για ακαδημαϊκές εφαρμογές. Το Tennis for Two δημιουργήθηκε με την πρόθεση να είναι παιχνίδι για διασκέδαση. Ως εκ τούτου του έχει δοθεί ο τίτλος του πρώτου βιντεοπαιχνιδιού. Στην οθόνη τώρα μπορείτε να δείτε τον προγραμματισμό που χρησιμοποιήθηκε για το Tennis for Two. Τέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα, το 1962, γεννήθηκε το Space War. Αναπτύχθηκε από μια ομάδα σπουδαστών του MIT, με επικεφαλής τον Steve Russell. Στο Space War δύο παίκτες ελέγχουν διαστημόπλοια σε αντίθετες πλευρές της οθόνης και προσπαθούν να καταστρέψουν ο ένας τον άλλον χρησιμοποιώντας τορπίλες. Είναι μια απλή ιδέα αλλά παιχνίδια όπως το Space War και το Tennis for Two ήταν οι πρόδρομοι της σύγχρονης βιομηχανίας βιντεοπαιχνιδιών, ήταν τα πρώτα στο είδος τους και «έστησαν τη σκηνή» για κάτι πάρα πολύ μεγαλύτερο. Για να καλύψουμε σωστά τη «Χρυσή Εποχή» των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών πρέπει πρώτα να μεταβούμε στο 1971. Εμπνευσμένοι από το Space War, ο Bill Pitts και ο Hugh Tuck, δύο σπουδαστές του Πανεπιστημίου Stanford, δημιούργησαν το Galaxy Game, μια εκδοχή του Space War με νομίσματα που έτρεχε σε έναν PDP-11 που στεγαζόταν σε ένα ξύλινο ντουλάπι. Περίπου τότε ο Nolan Bushnell και ο Ted Dabney από την Atari συνεργάστηκαν με τη Syzygy Engineering σε ένα παιχνίδι με τίτλο Computer Space. Το παιχνίδι αυτό ήταν μια άλλη εκδοχή του Space War με νομίσματα και θα γινόταν το πρώτο εμπορικό παιχνίδι arcade. Εμπνευσμένο από πρώιμες δημιουργίες όπως το Tennis for Two και το Ping Pong (επιτραπέζιο τένις), η Atari δημιούργησε το Pong που κυκλοφόρησε στις 29 Νοεμβρίου 1972. Το Pong ήταν μια τεράστια επιτυχία. Μέχρι το τέλος του ίδιου χρόνου είχαν πουληθεί πάνω από 8.000 μηχανές arcade Pong, εδραιώνοντας τη θέση του στην ιστορία. Αλλά αυτό ήταν μόνο η αρχή! Τα τέλη της δεκαετία του ’70 έως τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’80 γνώρισαν έναν πυρετό βιντεοπαιχνιδιών. Το 1978 έχουμε το Space Invaders. Η Atari μπήκε γρήγορα στη μάχη με τους αστεροειδείς, το καλύτερο σε πωλήσεις παιχνίδι arcade της όλων των εποχών! Tο 1980 ήρθε στη ζωή το Pacman, η ανταπόκριση σε αυτό δεν ήταν κάτι λιγότερο από ένα φαινόμενο. Ήταν ξεκάθαρο πως η δεκαετία του ’80 διαμορφωνόταν ώστε να γίνουν η δεκαετία των arcade παιχνιδιών. Το Donkey Kong, το Defender, το Galaga, το Mario Bros και πολλά άλλα θα εισάγονταν στα arcade. Με τον αριθμό των αιθουσών arcade να διπλασιάζονται στη Βόρεια Αμερική μεταξύ του 1980 και του 1982, η βιομηχανία βιντεοπαιχνιδιών ξεκινούσε να διαμορφώνεται. Φαινόταν ότι τίποτα δεν μπορούσε να επιβραδύνει αυτή την ορμή μέχρι το 1983. Αλλά πριν μιλήσουμε γι’ αυτό ας μιλήσουμε για τη γένεση των οικιακών κονσολών. Αυτός είναι ο Ralph Baer, γνωστός ως ο «πατέρας» των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών λόγω των πρώιμων συνεισφορών του στον κλάδο συνολικά. Το 1967 αυτός και η ομάδα του στην Sanders Associates ανέπτυξαν την πρώτη οικιακή κονσόλα, το Brown Box. Αφού δόθηκε άδεια στην Magnavox, αυτό θα πωλούνταν στους καταναλωτές το 1972 ως The Odyssey. Παρόλο που δεν ήταν επιτυχημένο εμπορικά το Odyssey θα αντιπροσώπευε τις πρώτες στάχτες του σύγχρονου gaming. Όλα χάρη σε ένα μικρό εγχείρημα ονομαζόμενο Ping Pong (επιτραπέζιο τένις). Ναι! Αυτό είναι το ίδιο Ping Pong που αναφέραμε προηγουμένως. Τράβηξαν την προσοχή του ιδρυτή της Atari, Nolan Bushnell και ενέπνευσε τους λάτρεις του Pong. Στα χνάρια του Odyssey η Atari, το 1977, θα κυκλοφορούσε το Atari 2600. Δεν μπορεί να υποτιμηθεί πόσο δημοφιλής ήταν αυτή η κονσόλα. Από το 1977 έως το 1992, 30.000.000 μονάδες πωλήθηκαν, κάτι πρωτοφανές για εκείνη την εποχή και είναι ξεκάθαρο γιατί. Το Atari 2600 έχει κορυφαία παιχνίδια στο δυναμικό του. Μερικά από αυτά είναι το Space Invaders, το Pacman, το Asteroids, το Donkey Kong. Το Atari 2600 αναβάθμισε το «σπίτι» των arcade. Είχε καλύτερα γραφικά και πιο έντονους ήχους από τις μηχανές arcade των προηγούμενων χρόνων και τελικά εξοικονομούσε χρήματα στους παίκτες μακροπρόθεσμα καθώς δεν υπήρχε ανάγκη να ρίχνουν χρήματα σε μια μηχανή κάθε φορά που ήθελαν να παίξουν. Πώς αυτό το φαινόμενο του Home Gaming θα άλλαζε το τοπίο; Ας το ανακαλύψουμε! Το 1982 οι πωλήσεις βιντεοπαιχνιδιών κυμαίνονταν στα 3,2 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια. Μέχρι το 1985, ωστόσο, ο αριθμός αυτός θα έπεφτε στα 97 με 100 εκατομμύρια. Γιατί; Για να το απαντήσουμε αυτό πρέπει να δούμε κάποιους από τους «παίκτες» της βιομηχανίας εκείνη την περίοδο. Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, Vectrex, Astrocade, Magnavox, Nintendo και άλλες, όλες μάχονταν για μια θέση σε αυτή την επανάσταση της ψυχαγωγίας. Ως αποτέλεσμα ο τεράστιος αριθμός επιλογών δημιουργούσε σύγχυση στους καταναλωτές. Η ποιότητα των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών που είχε εκτοξευθεί κατρακύλησε λόγω της προσπάθειας των εταιρειών να γεμίσουν τον περιορισμένο χώρο της λιανικής και να δημιουργήσουν παιχνίδια για πολλές κονσόλες. Η διασφάλιση ποιότητας και η δοκιμή των παιχνιδιών ήταν ουσιαστικά ανύπαρκτες, οδηγώντας σε παιχνίδια που στην πραγματικότητα δεν μπορούσε να παίξει κανείς. Δείτε ως παράδειγμα το Pacman για το Atari 2600. Ο λαβύρινθος έπρεπε να απλοποιηθεί λόγω του περιορισμένου συστήματος VCS του 2600. Οι μικρές πλακέτες που τρώει ο Pacman έπρεπε να αλλάξουν σε φλούδες ώστε να ταιριάζουν στο χρώμα του τοίχου, κάνοντας το παιχνίδι «βρώμικο» και περίπλοκο να το κοιτάς, ενώ τα φαντάσματα, οι εμβληματικοί χαρακτήρες του παιχνιδιού είχαν λιγότερα καρέ δημιουργώντας ένα ενοχλητικό εφέ, σαν να τρεμοπαίζει. Δυστυχώς, αυτό δεν ήταν μια μεμονωμένη περίπτωση στη βιομηχανία εκείνη την εποχή. Ο συνδυασμός αυτών των θεμάτων με τον γενικότερο υπερκορεσμό της αγοράς δημιούργησε μια «καταιγίδα» γνωστή ως η συντριβή των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών. Πώς ανέκαμψε όμως η βιομηχανία; Το 1985 η Nintendo είδε την ανάγκη να ανακτήσει την εμπιστοσύνη των καταναλωτών και των πωλητών λιανικής. Η έλλειψη διασφάλισης ποιότητας και η κακή διαχείριση πόρων για εταιρείες όπως η Atari «είχαν αφήσει άσχημη γεύση στο στόμα των ανθρώπων». Πώς όμως η Nintendo το διόρθωσε αυτό; Κυκλοφόρησε το Nintendo Entertainment System. Το NES σχεδιάστηκε με σκοπό να αποστασιοποιηθεί από την αγορά του gaming. Προωθήθηκε γενικότερα ως παιχνίδι στη βιομηχανία ψυχαγωγίας παρά ως κονσόλα. Προκειμένου να λύσει το ζήτημα της ποιότητας του παιχνιδιού η Nintendo ζήτησε από τους κατασκευαστές βιντεοπαιχνιδιών να πληρώνουν ένα ποσό για να έχουν το δικαίωμα κυκλοφορίας παιχνιδιών στο NES και για να αποκτήσουν τη σφραγίδα ποιότητας της Nintendo. Προκειμένου από την άλλη να αντιμετωπίσουν τον υπερκορεσμό οι εκδότες του NES είχαν τη δυνατότητα να κυκλοφορήσουν μέχρι πέντε παιχνίδια το χρόνο, αναγκάζοντάς τους έτσι να επικεντρώνονται στην ποιότητα και όχι στην ποσότητα. Έτσι, γεννήθηκαν κλασικά παιχνίδια όπως το Mega Man, το Castlevania και το Final Fantasy. Τώρα που η αγορά ήταν στο δρόμο προς την ανάκαμψη, τι θα ακολουθούσε; Το 1989 η Sega κυκλοφόρησε το Genesis. Το 1991 γεννήθηκε το Sonic the Hedgehog. Το NES και το Genesis θα έρχονταν σε σύγκρουση. Ο Mario και ο Sonic έγιναν σύμβολο των εταιρειών που εκπροσωπούσαν. Σύμβολα που είναι δημοφιλή ακόμα και σήμερα. Η φιλική προς την οικογένεια προσέγγιση της Nintendo σε πιο ώριμα θέματα άνοιξε την πόρτα στη Sega να στοχεύσει το πιο ενήλικο τμήμα της αγοράς, για παράδειγμα το Mortal Kombat. Η εκδοχή του Sega Genesis περιλάμβανε όλο το αίμα και την αιματοχυσία για τα οποία είναι γνωστή η σειρά του Mortal Kombat. Η Nintendo, αντίθετα, αντικατέστησε το αίμα με γκρίζο ιδρώτα. Στην αγορά των Η.Π.Α, η Nintendo και η Sega κονταροχτυπιόντουσαν για την πρώτη θέση, αλλά δεν μπορεί να ειπωθεί για την ιαπωνική αγορά. Η Nintendo κατάφερε να διατηρήσει το προβάδισμα στην ιαπωνική αγορά, με μικρή ως καθόλου απειλή από τη Sega, αλλά αυτό είναι μια άλλη ιστορία. Ας επιστρέψουμε στα παιχνίδια! Με την τεχνολογία να βελτιώνεται σταθερά, η ικανότητα απόδοσης πιο περίτεχνων μοντέλων και «κόσμων» υψηλότερης πιστότητας έγινε δυνατή. Κάθε παίκτης στην αγορά ήθελε να αφήσει το σημάδι του στο νέο τρισδιάστατο τοπίο. Η Sega κυκλοφόρησε το Saturn των 32-bit το 1995. Η Nintendo ανταπέδωσε με το Nintendo 64 το 1996. Από τα πρώτα χρόνια της δεκαετίας του ’90, έως και τα μέσα της, ένας νέος υποψήφιος ήρθε στο προσκήνιο. Η Sony μπήκε στη σκηνή των κονσόλων με το PlayStation. Και, με απλά λόγια, κυριάρχησε στην αγορά. Ενώ η Sega και η Nintendo είχαν τις πρώτες επιτυχίες όπως το Sonic και το Mario, η Sony ξεκίνησε την συνεργασία με τρίτους κατασκευαστές και «έκλεισε» αποκλειστικότητες όπως το Final Fantasy VII. Δημιούργησε τη δική της mascot στο Crash Bandicoot. Η κυριαρχία της Sony με το πρώτο PlayStation δεν μπορεί να υποτιμηθεί. Μιλώντας με αριθμούς, το Sega Saturn πούλησε 9,26 εκατομμύρια μονάδες, το Nintendo 64 πούλησε 32,93 εκατομμύρια, το PlayStation της Sony…; Πούλησε περισσότερο και από τις δύο κονσόλες μαζί! Το PlayStation απλώς επισκίασε τον ανταγωνισμό του πωλώντας τον εκπληκτικό αριθμό των 102.49 εκατομμυρίων. Ξεκάθαρα η Sony έκανε κάτι καλά. Η ευρεία μετάβαση στα τρισδιάστατα παιχνίδια στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’90 «έφερε» την αρχή των σύγχρονων franchise όπως το Metal Gear και το Resident Evil. Η Nintendo κυκλοφόρησε το Mario 64 και το The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Η κυριαρχία του PlayStation θα συνεχιζόταν έως τις αρχές του 2000 με το PlayStation 2 να γίνεται η κονσόλα με τις καλύτερες πωλήσεις όλων των εποχών, τίτλο που κατέχει έως σήμερα. Οι αρχές του 2000 γνώρισαν μια σημαντική αλλαγή στο πεδίο των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών. Η Microsoft μπήκε στη μάχη με το Xbox το 2001 γνωρίζοντας σχετική επιτυχία με 24,65 εκατομμύρια πωλήσεις. Η Sega διέκοψε την υποστήριξη του Dreamcast το 2001. Οι χαμηλές πωλήσεις οδήγησαν την Sega να αποσυρθεί από την αγορά κονσόλων. Η οποία μετατράπηκε αποκλειστικά σε εταιρεία λογισμικού, όπως και παραμένει έως σήμερα. Η Nintendo κυκλοφόρησε το GameCube το 2001, το οποίο όμως δεν είχε ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία λόγω της έλλειψης multimedia χαρακτηριστικών. Πούλησε 21,74 εκατομμύρια μονάδες, που σε καμία περίπτωση δεν αποτελούσε αποτυχία όμως ήταν πολύ πιο κάτω από την πρόβλεψη για 50 εκατομμύρια πωλήσεις. Η Sony συνέχισε να κυριαρχεί με την κυκλοφορία του PlayStation 2 το 2000, το οποίο και πάλι έγινε η πιο επιτυχημένη κονσόλα που κατασκευάστηκε ποτέ, πωλώντας 158,7 εκατομμύρια μονάδες στη διάρκεια ζωής του. Οι αλλαγές στις αρχές του 2000 διαμόρφωσαν το τοπίο των βιντεοπαιιδιών, όπως το γνωρίζουμε μέχρι σήμερα. Η Nintendo, η Microsoft και το PlayStation είναι τα τρία μεγάλα ονόματα στον κόσμο του gaming. Ας μιλήσουμε τώρα για τα σύγχρονα βιντεοπαιχνίδια. Στα μέσα του 2000 ξεκίνησε το HD gaming. Η Microsoft κυκλοφόρησε το Xbox 360, η Sony λάνσαρε το PlayStation 3 και η Nintendo «εξαπέλυσε» τη δύναμη των πωλήσεων της, το Wii. Τα μέσα του 2000 ήταν εκπληκτική στιγμή για τα βιντεοπαιχνίδια. Ας θυμηθούμε κάποια από αυτά! Εδώ υπάρχουν μερικές μόνο από τις κυκλοφορίες αυτής της εποχής βιντεοπαιχνιδιών. Το 2001 κυκλοφόρησε το Halo: Combat Evolved, το Devil May Cry και το Super Smash Bros: Melee. Το 2002 κυκλοφόρησε το Spiderman, το Metroid Prime και το Splinter Cell. Το 2003 το πρώτο Call of Duty. Το 2004 το Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Spiderman 2 και το Halo 2 και το 2005 το Shadow of the Colossus, το Resident Evil 4 και το πρώτο God of War. Η λίστα αυτή θα μπορούσε να συνεχιστεί αλλά το νόημα είναι ότι το πλήθος παιχνιδιών υψηλής ποιότητας που κυκλοφόρησαν γι’ αυτή τη γενιά κονσόλων, δεν μπορεί να υποτιμηθεί. Αυτό είναι μια απόδειξη για το πόσο είχαν εξελιχθεί τα βιντεοπαιχνίδια αυτή την περίοδο. Πολλά από τα franchises που κυκλοφόρησαν εκείνη την εποχή υπάρχουν ακόμη και σήμερα. Βρήκαν μια βάση και κατάφεραν να μεγαλώσουν και να εξελιχθούν μαζί με τους παίκτες τους. Αυτό είναι εκπληκτικό! Κατά κάποιο τρόπο θα ομαδοποιήσω το PS4, το PS5, το Xbox One X και το Xbox One S. Παρόλο που αυτές είναι δύο διαφορετικές γενιές, είμαστε ακόμη σε μεταβατική περίοδο. Η Sony επιτέλους ξεκαθάρισε τα ζητήματα διαθεσιμότητας του PS5. Η Microsoft ηγείται με την πλατφόρμα Game Pass αγοράζοντας κάθε εταιρεία ενώ η Nintendo απολαμβάνει την τεράστια επιτυχία του Nintendo Switch. Σήμερα, το gaming είναι πιο δημοφιλές από ποτέ πριν. Νέες παραγωγές εμφανίζονται μέρα με τη μέρα. Ανεξάρτητοι προγραμματιστές έχουν πλατφόρμες όπου μπορούν να λανσάρουν τη δουλειά τους και να γνωρίσουν επιτυχία. Μεγάλες επιτυχίες όπως το God of War, το Breath of the Wild και το Elden Ring είναι μερικές παραγωγές που ήταν ασύλληπτες στο ξεκίνημα της βιομηχανίας. Τώρα μπορούμε να παίζουμε σε 4K. Τα παιχνίδια έχουν υπερρεαλιστικά γραφικά, ακόμη και ρεαλιστική κίνηση των μαλλιών. Η Unreal Engine 5 εντυπωσιάζει με τα συστήματα Lumen και Nanite. Με αυτή τη ραγδαία εξέλιξη της τεχνολογίας και της ανάπτυξης παιχνιδιών, το ερώτημα είναι: τι ακολουθεί;
What you're seeing now is what's widely considered the first video game ever made. Created by physicist William Hagenbottom in 1958, tennis for two was played on an oscilloscope. This is a device used to display and analyze the waveform of electronic signals. While there were earlier creations that could be classified as "games" such as cathode ray tube amusement device and the Nimrod computer, these were built with the purpose of showing off computing power or for academic applications. Tennis for two was created with the intention of playing for fun, hence why it's been given the title of the first video game. On screen now is the programming used for tennis for two. Four years later, in 1962, Space War was born. It was developed by a group of students at MIT led by Steve Russell. In Space War, two players control spaceships on opposite sides of the screen and try to destroy each other using torpedoes. It's a simple concept, but games like Space War and tennis for two were the early precursors to the modern video game industry. They were the first of their kind, and they set the stage for something much, much bigger. To properly cover the golden age of video games, we have the first jump forward to 1971. Inspired by Space War, Bill Pits and Hugh Tuck, two students at Stanford University, created Galaxy Game. This is a coin-operated version of Space War that ran on the PDP-11 house inside of a wooden cabinet. Around this time, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Davney from Atari partnered with Sysigy Engineering on a game called Computer Space. This was another coin-operated version of Space War, and would become the first commercial arcade game. Inspired by early iterations like tennis for two and table tennis, Atari went on to create Pong. Released on November 29, 1972, Pong was a massive hit. By the end of that year, they sold more than 8,000 Pong arcade machines, cementing its place in history. But this was just the beginning. The late 1970s to mid-1980s saw a gold rush of games. In 1978, we got space invaders. Atari quickly joined the fray with asteroids, the best selling arcade game of all time. And in 1980, Pac-Man entered the scene. The response to these juggernauts was nothing short of phenomenal. It was clear that the 80s were shaping up to be the decade of the arcade. T-Cong, Defender, Gallega, Mario Bros, and many others would enter arcades across the nation. And with the number of arcades across North America doubling between 1980 and 1982, the video game industry was taking shape. It seemed like nothing could slow down the momentum until 1983. But before we get into that, let's talk about the genesis of home consoles. This is Ralph Baer, touted as the father of video games for his early contributions to the industry as a whole. In 1967, he and his cohorts at Sanders Associates developed the first home console, the Brown Box. After being licensed to Magnavox, this would be sold to consumers in 1972 as the Odyssey. While not commercially successful, the Odyssey would represent the first embers of modern day gaming. All thanks to a little project called Table tennis. Yes, this is the same table tennis we mentioned earlier that grabbed the attention of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and inspired the likes of Pong. In the footsteps of the Odyssey, in 1977 Atari will release the Atari 2600. It can't be understated just how popular this console was. From 1977 to 1992, 30 million units were sold, unprecedented at that time. And it's plain to see why. The Atari 2600 had some absolute powerhouses on its roster, space invaders, Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Donkey Kong to name a few. The Atari 2600 brought the arcade home. It had better graphics and sharper sound than the arcade machines of yesterday and ultimately saved its player's money in the long run as there was no need to drop quarters in a machine every time you wanted to play. How would this phenomenon of home gaming change the landscape? Let's find out. In 1982, video game sales were sitting at a rather comfortable $3.2 billion. By 1985, however, this figure would drop 97% to just $100 million. Why? To answer that, we need to look at some of the players in the industry at the time. Atari, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Vectrix, Valley Astrocade, Vagnavox, Nintendo, and more were all fighting for their spot in this new entertainment revolution. As a result, the sheer number of options for consumers was confusing. The quality of games being pushed out plummeted due to companies rushing to fail limited retail space and developing games for multiple consoles. The assurance and play testing was virtually nonexistent, leading to frankly unplayable games. Take the Pac-Man port for the Atari 2600 as an example. The Mays had to be simplified due to the 2600's limited VCS system. The small pellets that Pac-Man eats had to be changed to wafers, which matched the color of the wall, making the game muddy and confusing to look at. In the ghosts, iconic characters were rendering once every four frames leading to a really annoying flickering effect. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated case in the industry at the time. Combine these issues with the general oversaturation of the market, and we have a perfect storm for what's been called the video game crash. How did the industry recover? In 1985, Nintendo saw the need to regain consumer and retailer trust. The lack of quality assurance and poor resource management for companies like Atari had left a bad taste in people's mouths. How did Nintendo fix this? Enter the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES was designed to distance itself from the gaming market, marketed as a toy and general entertainment system more than a game console. To solve the issue of game quality, Nintendo required all publishers to pay for the right to publish games on the NES, and they had to obtain the Nintendo seal of quality. To solve oversaturation, publishers on NES could only release up to five games per year, forcing them to focus on quality over quantity. Out of this spawned timeless classics like Mega Man, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. Now that the market was on the road to recovery, what comes next? In 1989, Sega released the Genesis. In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog was born. The NES and the Genesis would proceed to go head-to-head. Mario and Sonic became icons for their brands, icons that are still standing today. Nintendo's family-friendly approach to more mature themes opened a door for Sega to corner the more adult section of the market, Mortal Kombat as an example. The Sega Genesis version included all of the blood and gore that the Mortal Kombat series is known for, whereas the Nintendo version replaced the blood with gray sweat. In the US market, Nintendo and Sega went blow-for-blow, but that can't be said for the Japanese market. Nintendo was able to maintain its stranglehold on the gaming market in Japan, with little to no threat from Sega. But the details of that is a video for another time, let's get back to the games. With technology steadily improving, the ability to render more complex models and higher fidelity worlds became possible. Each major player wanted to leave their mark on the new three-dimensional landscape. Sega released its 32-bit Saturn in 1995, and Nintendo fired back with the Nintendo 64 in 1996, but the early to mid-90s saw a new contender enter the scene. Sony joined the console landscape with the PlayStation, and to put it simply, they dominated the market. While Sega and Nintendo had first-party juggernauts like Sonic and Mario, Sony cornered the third party market and locked down timed exclusives like Final Fantasy VII, they developed their own mascot and Crash Bandicoot. It can't be understood just how dominant Sony was with the original PlayStation. To put it into perspective, the Sega Saturn sold 9.26 million units, the Nintendo 64 sold 32.93 million units, the Sony PlayStation sold more than both consoles combined. The PlayStation absolutely dwarfed its competition, selling and astonishing 102.49 million units. Clearly, Sony was doing something right. The widespread transition to 3D games in the mid-90s saw the beginning of modern day franchises, like Metal Gear and Resident Evil. Nintendo released Super Mario 64 in the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. The PlayStation domination would continue into the early 2000s with the PlayStation 2 becoming the best-selling console of all time, a title that still holds on to to this day. The early 2000s saw quite a change to the gaming landscape. Microsoft entered the fray with their Xbox in 2001, finding relative success selling 24.65 million units. And Sega pulled the plug on the Dreamcast in 2001, after poor commercial performance. That spelled the end of their stay in the console market. They transitioned exclusively into a software company, which they remain as today. Nintendo released a GameCube in 2001, which garnered mixed reception due to the lack of multimedia features. It sold 21.74 million units, not a failure by any means, but this was far behind the projected 50 million units. Sony continued its domination, releasing the PlayStation 2 in the year 2000, which, again, went on to become the most successful console ever made, selling 158.7 million units over the course of its life. The changes in the early 2000s set the stage for the gaming landscape today. Nintendo, Microsoft and PlayStation are the big three in the gaming world. Let's talk about the modern gaming landscape. The mid-2000s kicked off HD gaming. Microsoft released the Xbox 360, Sony launched the PlayStation 3, and Nintendo unleashed the sales powerhouse that was the Wii. The mid-2000s was such a good time for gaming. Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we? Here are just a few releases within this era of gaming. In 2001, saw Halo combat evolved to Devil May Cry and Super Smash Bros. Melee, 2002, Spider-Man Metroid Prime and Splinter Cell, 2003, we had the first ever Call of Duty. 2004 had Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Spider-Man 2 and Halo 2, and in 2005, we got Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 4, and the first God of War. I could go on and on, but the point is, the amount of high quality games releasing for this generation of consoles can't be understated. This is a testament to just how far video games had come at this time. A lot of the franchises released in this era are still around today. They found a foothold and have been able to grow and evolve with their players. That's amazing. I'm going to kind of loop together PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X and S in the Switch. While these are two separate generations, we're still in the transitionary period. Sony has finally cleared up the inventory issues for PS5. Microsoft is steaming ahead with Game Pass and buying up every company this side of the horizon, and Nintendo is enjoying the massive success of the Nintendo Switch. Today, gaming is more popular than ever before. More studios are propping up every day. The developers have platforms where they can launch their work and find success. Blockbusters like God of War, Breath of the Wild, and Elden Ring are developments that couldn't even be dreamed of at the outset of this industry. Now we can play in 4K. Games have hyper-realistic graphics with hair physics. Unreal Engine 5 is making waves with its lumen and nanite systems. With this rapid advancement in technology and development, the question is, what's next?
